What Pool
Imogen Makepeace has been involved in the water birth movement since 1992. Of her third and latest development in pool design, she says
“One of the most important factors of my pools is that the liner allows thorough cleaning. All surfaces are visible and accessible; there are no pockets, folds, or channels where bacteria can remain and multiply undetected”
“It is not adequate to swill a solution over the surface, if the surface cannot be scrubbed, then something called a “biofilm” which is a viscous slime not removed by water and detergent alone, can build up which may harbour harmful bacteria.”
Her training as a midwife and experience of providing Birthing Pools for use at home since 1992 has given Imogen a detailed understanding of the medical care concerns that occupy the minds of midwives and health professionals and the wishes, anxieties and expectations of women approaching labour and birth.
This experience of birth combines with the knowledge obtained from studying the degree level midwifery course (1997 - 2000) to give her a dual perspective on the subject: from the points of view of both women approaching childbirth and the midwives and health professionals who attend her.
This unique perspective forms the foundation of the service that we provide. Being deeply aware of the importance of facilitating women to make choices about how they give birth, we seeks to offer an option for giving birth that combines the best of both views.
Choosing a safe, reliable birthing pool
The Primavera (meaning Spring) is a development from the Genesis. Differences include more durable panels, better liner design, improved cover, improved filter housing attachment, and the same reliable and high quality heating unit with inbuilt failsafe devices
How to choose a heated birthing pool.
There are concerns about using a recirculating water heater, because organic material in the water can encourage bacterial growth which may lead to infection in mother or baby. Without good prevention measures and control this is a real possibility.
We have looked into these problems and devised solutions to them. See the checklist below.
As heated birthing pool hirers since 1992, we have had over 4,000 hires and no reports of infection at all. In fact many customers return for second or subsequent babies and many midwives, both Independent and otherwise have used the pools for their own births.
